Lighter Troubleshooting: Why Isn’t My Petrol Lighter Sparking?

You’ve finally taken apart that old petrol lighter and carefully put it back together. Mechanically, everything seems right. You’re feeling pretty proud of yourself. You slip in the flint, tighten down the screw, and wait for the moment of truth… no spark. What went wrong? Or maybe you didn’t even get that far—the mechanism jammed again.
Don’t worry. This quick troubleshooting guide covers the most common reasons why vintage petrol lighters fail to spark and how to fix them.
1. Wrong Flint

Not all flints are created equal. Some file wheels are made from different metals and need a harder compound to spark reliably. My go-to flint is usually the softer Kiribi flint, because it tends to work well across many models. However, if your lighter still isn’t sparking, try swapping in a different brand. A simple flint change often solves the problem.
2. Misaligned Clutch Spring
A common issue is that the clutch spring (the small spring that helps the file wheel catch) isn’t seated correctly. For “C” style clutch spring lighters, make sure you follow the correct diagram.

For lighters with the spring built into the snuffer, ensure the file wheel teeth are engaging with the spring tab.
Push the little tab as far under the snuffer as possible so it properly catches the gear.
Fun Fact: If your file wheel has teeth shaped like a saw blade, your lighter uses a “pawl spring”. Ronson popularized this design, and while they later switched to a “C” style clutch system, many Japanese models still used the pawl spring.

3. Worn or Damaged Parts
Even when the mechanism spins freely without a flint, years of wear can take their toll. If the gears are missing teeth or the file wheel is worn down, the lighter may bind or slip once flint pressure is applied. In this case, replacement parts may be the only solution.
